Can You Split Payment on AirBnB?

No, you cannot split payment on Airbnb. As of 2022, Airbnb no longer lets guests share or split a single payment between multiple credit cards.

Currently, if you intend to split your booking total between group members on Airbnb, you (the verified Airbnb user) will have to pay the full cost to Airbnb through the website/app, then have your friends pay their share to you, maybe leveraging a different method to divvy up payments.

Airbnb mandates all guests to pay for their bookings either through a debit card or a credit card. Airbnb guests are not allowed to pay on arrival or through a bank/wire transfer. They are expected to confirm their payment details when making a reservation and hosts don’t receive any payment until 24 hours after their guests’ check-in.

However, with most standard rentals, you can choose to pay only a part of the fee at the time of booking, giving you time to calculate how much other guests need to pay you. Up until 2018, Airbnb provided a feature that was well-renowned among users: split rental fees.

Note that with just a few extra clicks of the mouse on your Mac or PC, or taps on your iPhone or Android; you could easily invite everyone staying at a rental to pay their share of the fee and avoid those clumsy conversations about who owed who how much cash or who might have sent money through other apps.

Presently, this feature is no longer on Airbnb, and if you want to split the cost of an Airbnb rental, you will have to go through the old-fashioned route. The split payment feature was a welcome addition in the Airbnb industry, but it didn’t take long for complaints to start coming in.

Although guests may have loved it, a good percentage of hosts did not. The primary predicament was that guests had 72 hours to take advantage of the Split payments feature. If someone didn’t pay by the end of the 72 hours, the reservation for the rentals was canceled.

Have it in mind that this entails that the host’s calendar was blocked out for 3 days, and this amount of time generally reduced the potential amount of money or income a host is expected to make in a month. In addition, there were a lot of qualifications that hosts were expected to comply with in a bid to list split payment listings.

Alternatives to Splitting Airbnb Payments

Just like it was explained above, unless you have Airbnb credits or a coupon to use, you can’t split the total cost of your Airbnb stay across multiple payment methods. However, there are a few external alternatives to consider, and they include;

  1. Venmo, Cashapp, PayPal, and Other Payment Apps

Mobile technology and peer-to-peer (P2P) payment apps like Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, Zelle®, and the rest have indeed changed how people exchange money in this age. Without doubts, there’s a good chance you are one of the millions of Americans who have sent or gotten funds through these apps. To use them to split Airbnb payments, here are steps to take.

  • The Airbnb user will have to pay the Airbnb rental upfront. Taking the whole cost of the reservation.
  • After making the payment, the user can then send out multiple Venmo/Cashapp requests to friends.
  • Then ask them to accept the request so they can pay their fair share.
  1. Ysplit

Ysplit is an app that was built for roommates to auto-split utility bills. Note that when you live with roommates or go out often with friends, it’s usually one person who pays the bills upfront — be it for utilities, the cable bill, rent, or the restaurant bill — and then everyone can pay them back via cash, Venmo or Apple Pay.

However, with Ysplit, you create a virtual card that automatically deducts money from everyone’s bank account. Therefore, the person who usually pays the bills upfront would instead use Ysplit’s virtual card. To use Ysplit to split Airbnb payment, here are steps to take;

  • Download Ysplit on either the App Store or Playstore
  • Create your account, and remember you don’t have to link a billing account unless you have other utility bills you want to pay and auto-split.
  • Navigate to the card tab and carefully find where you can generate your Ysplit virtual card.
  • Start your Ysplit premium free trial to create your virtual card.
  • Tap pay now below your card to create a Ysplit session. Note that this lets you invite anyone you want to participate in the transaction.
  • Once you do that, everyone will receive an invite, and you’ll be able to watch everyone join in real-time.
  • After this point, your whole party will have added their bank info to pay their share.

Conclusion

Airbnb no longer allows guests to split a single payment between multiple credit cards. Have it in mind that the simplest way to split the cost of an Airbnb is to have one person pay the whole bill via the Airbnb site or app and then have everyone else pay their fair share through Venmo, PayPal, CashApp, Apple Pay, or any other preferred payment split app.

Also note that some rentals will let you make a down payment when booking and then complete the rest in installments, providing you with time to collect payments from everyone else staying at the Airbnb.
